I have a new love in my life and I'd like you to meet him.

 photo toaster_zps32804b07.jpg
I would like to introduce you to the new love of my life:
The Toaster.
 photo toaster2_zpsa50406a1.jpg
We purchased this little beauty a few months ago and it has been making our kitchen a brighter, more lovelier, more retro and more epic place ever since. I am TOTES in love with the green-vintagey vibe  - and just LOOK at those sexy-little knobs! Ain't NOBODY got sexy-toaster-knobs like us.
 photo toaster4_zps3026224b.jpg
It's been sitting in the corner in it's quiet, uber (understatedly cool) manner - just smugly gloating at all the other appliances over how supreme it is. This toaster is the hipster of toasters. You wanna set your toast colour? Here, turn my dial. There are definitely kitchen-appliance debates when we go to sleep at night, and I can guarantee you - the toaster always wins.
 photo Toaster3_zpse084a42e.jpg

And you know what guys?
The best part?
It makes amazing toast too.

 photo toaster5_zps09714f50.jpg
(Just for the record, the toast below is not burnt - it has Bovril on it. But given my reputation in the kitchen, I wouldn't blame you for thinking otherwise.)
 photo toaster6_zpscfdbb40d.jpg
I honestly have no idea why I chose to share this with you, perhaps I'm just so besotted with our lovely new kitchen friend.

Who knows - maybe tomorrow I'll introduce you to the fridge.

Winner Dinner

So.

I lost a game of backgammon on honeymoon.

Which means -
I owed the husband a three course home cooked meal.

Now. Anyone who has been following indieBerries for a while, will know that kitchen + Ché do not mix. Like Oil and water. And flames. Put me in the kitchen and you get exploding eggscharcoal donuts and fried onions as a gourmet meal. At some point, I may even blog about the day I blew up a casserole dish. And when I say "blew up" I mean there was glass shards, chicken, potatoes and peas flying all over the kitchen. But I digress.

My cooking skills are so far lacking that guys, I don't even really know what cream cheese is.

 photo windin5_zps4813279a.png
I literally have to call for backup when purchasing recipe-required groceries.

So there I was determined to pay my betting debts and cook a three course meal for my husband.
Off I trundled to the shops to buy the ingredients - all the while having trusty bridesmaid Nicole on standby to ensure that I am not about to buy Cottage Cheese to make cheesecake.

And so preparations begin - (bearing in mind, I didn't make things necessarily in this order and they weren't all sitting waiting getting cold when husband walked in - in fact, that moment was an all time fiasco). In fact, everything was a fiasco. These pictures are so much more calm that what was really all going on. Anyway - I'm just showing you in the order they were nommed -

THE STARTER:

I decided to follow this Martha Stewart recipe to make "Devils on Horseback" which is really just the fancy way of saying "dates-stuffed-with-blue-cheese-wrapped-in-bacon". Now Martha's recipe says "dates" I say, "Whatever Martha, It's MY kitchen. And in MY KITCHEN, we use prunes".

First rule of cooking is probably I should always just stick to the recipe.
Whatevs.

 photo windin7_zps829d0fdb.jpg

So I cut those prunes open, stuffed their little bellies with blue cheese and then wrapped their behinds in BACON.

 photo windin8_zpsf590f297.jpg

Skewered them up with a toothpick and then whacked them in the oven.
Martha said they would take 20 - 25 minutes.

But Martha is a liar.

a tax-evading, liar.

They took way longer than that.

 photo windin9_zpsfef531ea.jpg

So that was my starter.

I know it is not technically a "starter" it's more of  hors d'oeuvres.
No need to get picky about that -

My Kitchen, My Rules.

THE MAIN COURSE

For main course I thought I would attempt something yummy off the Simply Delicious Blog and decided to go for this Beef Penang - given the Husband's affinity to spicy dishes.

Start chopping onions -

 photo windin1_zps9f69cd74.jpg

Mmm. Don't think my hands should be looking like this.
anyway, moving forward

 photo windin14_zps36fb6c0f.jpg

Of course, when I was buying all the ingredients, I suddenly hit a panic attack when I got to the chili aisle and realised there are a bajillion thousand different kinds of chili. I decided to ask the guru and tweet messaged Mrs Simply Delish herself to ask -

 photo windin2_zps7a4bd8d6.png photo windin4_zps3f053232.png

It is very reassuring to know that Mrs Simply Delish was a tweet away, even if only to inform her that the house was now in flames. I'm pretty sure she would have a good wine pairing for that at least. But... we survived the curry making and ended up with a good hot curry for our mains.

Had many internal monologues whilst preparing this meal:
"Mmm this meal is for four. I'm cooking for two. Should I use all the coconut milk? Or only half? No I should use all of it. But wait, I only have half the meat. Oh no. don't stray from the recipe. But I don't have enough meat! I've basically already strayed from the recipe. Ok, should I just add potato then? No that's a bad idea. Ok. Imma add the coconut milk. No wait. Oh no. too late. Ok. we've got a pile of coconut milk-cream. ok, now I probably need to add carrots."
Am upset I don't have a proper picture of the finished curry, but it's probably for the best, because my curry looked NOTHING like Alida's. lol.

 photo windin12_zpsca3b4088.jpg
Also - I served my curry with garlic bread and not rice because
Imagine if i had to try and make rice too.

THE DESSERT

When i first moved to London, Warren's sister gave me the Nigella Express recipe book. In fact, when we got engaged Warr's mom gave me a really cool recipe book. And just after my visit to Jhb, his other sister also gave me a recipe book. It's like they're trying to tell me something, but what?

So anyway, I decided to "whip up" a cheesecake from Nigella's book -
And this is when things really went pear shaped - which is ironic, since this is the dish that I started with.

 photo windin16_zps2e34944c.jpg

Internal Monologues:

"Mmm... Ok. it's all going fine. You're gonna be fine. It's all fine. Just follow the recipe, it will all be fine. Recipe says one teaspoon lemon juice. What!? My Warren loves lemon juice! This Nigella. She don't know WHAT she's talking about. Imma add more lemon juice. Yeah. Two tablespoons. That's better. Pfft Nigella. Whatever. YOU don't know MY WARREN. He loves him some lemon juice! Mmm. this is pretty runny. Actually, it's like really runny. Maybe I should add some more sugar? Ok, more sugar then. Recipe says 'beat cream' Oh. I can't find those beater stick things. Dayyymmn. Well. I'm sure if i just stir it twice with mah teaspoon it'll be fine. Yeah. It'll be fine. Mmm it's so lemon-y! Olleh! Put it in the fridge!"

And then because I'm FREAKING UNSTOPPABLE, I made chocolate pouring sauce.
Yeah you heard me:

 photo windin13_zpsae9799e8.jpg

Three hours later:

"Imma check on my lemon-y cheesecake! Hmm. this isn't setting at all. In fact, this is runnier than it was when I started. Dinner is in two hours. HOW TO FIX?"

Message Nicole.
Nicole Suggests put that thang in freezer.

Good idea.

Four hours later upon dessert serving time, Nicole messaged again -

 photo windin3_zpsf68ad20c.png

But at least it looked pretty -

 photo windin11_zpse4737e5b.jpg

After all the preparations were done, I set up a mini make-shift table for us in the lounge -

 photo windin15_zps5477caf9.jpg

I made a door sign for our front door - so that the husband would see it and have to knock, so that I would not be suddenly surprised by him walking right on in. Also - so that I could greet him at the door with a glass of bubbles - because that's what all wives do, right? Right.

 photo windin6_zps860904b9.jpg

Once I'd finished all the cooking, I switched my cooking apron for my cute apron that the Bridesmaids gave to me at my kitchen tea, with heels obvs.

 photo windin10_zpsc1644761.jpg

I mean. pfffft. Whatever.
I was wearing that the whole day.

And then I waited for the man to come home and enjoy his backgammon winnings -
I gave him the job of wine pourer

 photo windin18_zpsba7bacdd.jpg

Which he was very good at - and I ensured the wine was at optimal freeze temperature -

 photo windin17_zps9e60b006.jpg
Because we know how much my man loves his frozen drinks and such.

We noshed our three course meal, which was both edible and charcoal-free (WINNING!) and then sat on the floor in the lounge with a bottle of wine and discussed our lovely life -

 photo windin19_zps0dadc41d.jpg

I know I lost the backgammon game

But I totes won at that evening.
Even if the curry was a mush-pile and the cheese cake was icicles.

Ka-ching.

{Ahem} Allow me to brag

Photobucket
A little while ago - when I was still in London with le Fiance, he decided to cook up a delicious seafood paella with some amazing local ingredients that we sourced at the Borough Market. Let's just get this straight - Warren is the chef in this relationship. I have to google 'how-to-boil-an-egg' and usually just blow them up in the microwave anyway.

So we he decided to start our delicious Sunday-cook-a-thon around 11am so that we could have a nice late Sunday-seafood lunch. We started early because there was a lot of prep work - especially with seafood, because we had to wash the calamari, scrub the mussels and de-vein the prawns (ie: take out their poop-bags). (I got my mom to phone me during this process so that I didn't have to help.

"international call - gotta go".

Then when all the gross jobs were finished we he took the ingredients outside to whack onto the new skottel. I offered to help:
Photobucket
Warren: yes, ok. you can just sit there and drink the wine.

Mr Warren got his cook on:

Peppers // lemongrass // chili

Photobucket
sundried tomato concoction

Photobucket
mussels. (and look how well i cleaned them!)

Photobucket
olives // red onions // mushrooms

Photobucket Photobucket
delicious prawns (minus poop-bags)

My Warr Cookin'.

Photobucket
calamari // sundried tomatoes // olives // garlic

Warren (because he was jealous of my sitting-on-the-chair-and-wine-drinking) then decided to give me the job of cutting the lemon grass.
me: ok... well... can you help me?
Warr:  you just do it!
me: no.. but like... which side is it?

Dear Future Children
This is what your mother looks like when she is "cooking"
Pay close attention to the pictures above because you won't see it often.
Regards
Yoh momma.

Photobucket Photobucket
Warren fried some stuff, then he added some more stuff, then he cooked up that stuff with the rest of the stuff. I drank the wine.
Photobucket Photobucket
Then My Man had a brilliant idea -

The Warr: why don't i get a few pictures of you mixing some of this stuff then you can put it on your blog and pretend that you cooked it.
Che: oooooh!! good one!

he's a nice guy, that one.

Photobucket
"so then you very carefully add the... (warren, what is this again?) ok, so you add the prawns to the mussels (these are the mussels, hey?) ooh im getting into this!... do you think i should just add a bit of that sauce over there?!"
"No, it's ok, we've got the the picture just put down everything - you can go back to drinking the wine."

You will also notice from these pictures that it is now well past lunch time.
it is also in fact well past my supper time too.

Photobucket
Finally after an epic day of cooking (warren cooking, me annoying him) we sat down to tuck into THE most delicious feast. We had also amassed quite a crowd of spectators in the courtyard who had been watching and smelling the delicious cook-a-thon - coincidentally the spectators decided to come have a "chat" right when it was time for nomming. It honestly was the most fragrant delicious combination of flavours I have ever sampled in a seafood or anyfood dish: lemongrass, chili, garlic infused olives, sundried tomatoes, mussels, calamari, fresh cream, thin noodles and prawns. And I'm not just saying that cause i'm biased - We have a whole bunch of "chatters" who will concur.

I had seconds.

and maybe thirds.

(and i finished what was left in warren's bowl)

Photobucket

and then we locked ourselves out the house and had to break into an open window.

Photobucket

It was maybe my wine drinking that did that.

Maybe.

Cooking for the in-laws

On Sunday, I invited the future in-laws around for lunch. Little Miss Cooking-Catastrophe decided to cook for the in-laws. That is bravery right there, folks. The lovely Warra's mom had bought me an awesome cookbook the last time I went to stay with them (subtle hint if I do say so myself)  -

Photobucket
One, Two, Three On the Table - Bernice van der Merwe.

It's super handy book because the meals are all categorised into how long they take to prepare. (Even although the "ten-minute" meals really take me closer to two hours. But I think that's me, not the book.) I decided to make the Mediterranean Chicken Dish - which turned out to be rather yum. (high-five self) I decided to make one of my mom's delicious puds for dessert - We call it Star pudding. But it's probably got a bajillion-other names...

The Recipe is really simple and trust me - if I can do it, YOU can do it.
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
2 beaten eggs
1 cup apricot jam
1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon
2 tablespoons butter
3/4 of a teaspoon bicarb mixed with -
1 cup of milk
Rub butter into flour, then stir all the ingredients in. Bake at 180' until golden brown (about 20 mins)
Sauce:
2 cups cream (I used one)
1 cup sugar
2 beaten eggs
Beat together and wait until pudding is cooled before pouring it over. Bake for 10-15 mins at 180' until it goes golden-brown on top.
Serve with cream and/or ice-cream.
yum.
You can also check out The Vegan Stoner for amazing Vegan recipes that are quick and easy to prepare and each recipe is posted with a simple cartoon list of ingredients and method - cute and tasty.
